Pair of homers lift Pirates over Giants in 10

Pair of homers lift Pirates over Giants in 10

Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run home run and Ke'Bryan Hayes followed with a solo shot in the top of the 10th inning Saturday night, delivering the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

One night after the Giants' Patrick Bailey homered on the final pitch of the game to produce a 3-0 win, the Pirates saved their power for their last at-bat against San Francisco's fifth pitcher, Taylor Rogers (0-1).

With the extra-inning runner placed on second, Rogers got Andrew McCutchen to pop out before Reynolds hooked his fourth homer of the season inside the left field foul pole for a two-run lead.

Hayes' homer, his first of the year, came two pitches later.

Pirates closer David Bednar, who failed to get anyone out in the Giants' three-run uprising in the ninth in the series opener, served up a two-run homer to Jorge Soler on the third pitch he threw in the bottom of the inning. But he then overcame a one-out infield single by Thairo Estrada by striking out LeMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski for his fifth save.

The homer was Soler's fifth of the season. It also scored extra-innings runner Patrick Bailey.

Hunter Stratton (1-0), who got the final two outs of the bottom of the ninth in a 1-1 game, was credited with the win.

For the second night in a row, starting pitchers dominated.

The Pirates pulled Martin Perez after the Giants had opened the scoring with an unearned run in the last of the sixth. A fielding error by shortstop Alika Williams set the stage for Wilmer Flores' one-out double that put the Giants on top.

Perez was charged with just the unearned run and four hits in his six innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Giants starter Jordan Hicks faced just one batter with the lead, allowing a leadoff single to Connor Joe in the seventh. Joe came around to score after a single by Jack Suwinski and a walk to Jared Triolo loaded the bases for Rowdy Tellez's sacrifice fly.

Hicks allowed one run and five `hits in his six-plus innings. He struck out nine without walking anyone.

Reynolds, Hayes and Joe all had two hits for the Pirates, who out-hit the Giants 11-7 en route to snapping a three-game losing streak.

Ranger Suarez sparkles as Phillies turn back Padres

Ranger Suarez sparkles as Phillies turn back Padres

Ranger Suarez threw eight brilliant innings Saturday night and Alec Bohm drove in four runs as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies cruised to a 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres.

Suarez (5-0) gave up three hits and a run with no walks and eight strikeouts. The only blemish was Eguy Rosario's third homer of the year with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

It was the first run allowed in 33 innings off Suarez, who threw 64 of his 96 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 1.32.

Dylan Cease (3-2) suffered his first loss since March 30, lasting six innings and allowing five runs off six hits and three walks. Cease fanned five.

Entering the game permitting just five hits in his past 19 innings, Cease ran into immediate trouble in front of a sellout crowd.

Trea Turner singled with one out and Bohm struck with two outs, drilling a two-run homer to left-center, his fourth of the year.

It was still a 2-0 game in the fifth when Philadelphia put it out of reach. After getting two quick outs, Cease couldn't find the third until allowing three more runs.

Whit Merrifield and Turner sandwiched singles around a Kyle Schwarber walk to fill the bases.

Bryce Harper worked a walk to score Merrifield, and Bohm delivered a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Suarez never threw a truly stressful pitch. He worked from the stretch to only two hitters the entire game. The only San Diego hitter to reach second base was Rosario on his homer.

Turner went 3-for-5, including his 10th double of the season, and scored twice. He is now hitting .345.

Bohm finished with two hits, and his four RBIs boosted his season total to 26.

Jurickson Profar and Jose Azocar were the only other Padres to manage hits and Azocar was promptly picked off during Xander Bogaerts' at-bat.

Guardians pull out win over Braves in 11 innings

Guardians pull out win over Braves in 11 innings

Josh Naylor doubled home the go-ahead run and pinch-hitter Ramon Laureano added a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning to help the visiting Cleveland Guardians defeat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Saturday, ending Atlanta's four-game winning streak.

Scott Barlow (2-2) held the Braves scoreless in the bottom of the 10th inning and Nick Sandlin came in in the 11th to get the save and square the three-game series at one game apiece. The losing pitcher was Dylan Lee (0-1).

The Braves wasted their best chance in the 10th inning when they loaded the bases and could not score.

Neither starting pitcher figured in the decision despite each pitching seven scoreless innings. Cleveland's Tyler Bibee allowed two hits, no walks and matched his career high with nine strikeouts. Atlanta's Charlie Morton went a season-long seven innings, gave up four hits, one walk and struck out six.

The Guardians had a chance but came up empty in the sixth. With Jose Ramirez at first, Naylor lined a double to right field where Ronald Acuna Jr. fielded and fired to cutoff man Matt Olson, who threw to catcher Travis d'Arnaud for the successful tag at the plate.

The Guardians scored two runs in the eighth against reliever Joe Jimenez without getting the ball out of the infield. With the bases loaded and one out, Ramirez hit a ground ball that could not be turned into a double play, allowing Gabriel Arias to score. It was the team-leading 24th RBI for Ramirez.

With runners on the corners, Ramirez stole second, with Steven Kwan scoring on the front end of the double steal.

The Braves tied the game by scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Hunter Gaddis, who allowed his first runs of the season. D'Arnaud doubled home a run and Jarred Kelenic roped an RBI single to center field, but center fielder Tyler Freeman was able to throw out pinch-runner Luke Williams trying to score from third.

Andrew Benintendi's walk-off home run leads White Sox past Rays

Andrew Benintendi's walk-off home run leads White Sox past Rays

Andrew Benintendi went 3-for-5 with six RBIs and drilled a game-ending two-run home run in the 10th inning to propel the host Chicago White Sox to an 8-7 victory Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Benintendi connected against Phil Maton (0-2), who blew the save after the Rays scored a run against Deivi Garcia (1-2) in the top half. The White Sox have won consecutive games for the first time this season while securing their first series win.

Automatic runner Curtis Mead advanced to third on a wild pitch during the first at-bat of the Tampa Bay 10th. He scored on another wild pitch three batters later, moments after Garcia worked back from a 3-0 count to strike out Niko Goodrum for the second out of the inning.

Eloy Jimenez and Tommy Pham had two hits apiece for Chicago. Richie Palacios and Ben Rortvedt each had three hits for the Rays.

Chicago reliever Steven Wilson stranded the bases loaded in the eighth in an inning that started when Rortvedt's apparent home run was overturned to a single on replay review. Wilson induced infield flies from Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes to end the threat.

Tampa Bay scored the first run of the game on Jose Caballero's RBI single in the second inning.

Palacios extended the Rays' lead to 3-0 with a two-run home run in the fourth.

Benintendi tied the game for the White Sox with a three-run blast in the bottom half, his first home run of the season.

The power surge continued with the Rays' Austin Stenton's solo homer, his first in the majors, in the top of the fifth, but the lead was short-lived. The White Sox scored three more runs in the fifth, with a Gavin Sheets RBI double and Benintendi RBI single to go with a fielder's choice.

Tampa Bay tied the game again on Arozarena's two-run double in the sixth.

Neither starter factored into the decision. The Rays' Aaron Civale scattered six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Chicago counterpart Jonathan Cannon worked five innings, allowing four runs and eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Rays removed center fielder Jose Siri from the game in the third inning. The team said the move was not injury-related.

The Yankees posted season highs in both runs and hits (19) in winning for the sixth time in their last 10 games. The Brewers lost for just the third time in 10 games.

Rhys Hoskins got the Brewers on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning with a 411-foot solo homer to left-center off Rodon. It was Hoskins' sixth homer of the year.

But Ross got into trouble again in the third when he loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single. With one out, Gleyber Torres cleared the bases by slashing an opposite-field double to the right-center field gap, and New York was up 6-1.

The Yankees padded the lead to 7-1 in the fifth when Anthony Rizzo singled and scored on Oswaldo Cabrera's single to right.

Aaron Judge made it 9-1 Yankees in the sixth when he connected for his fifth homer of the year, a two-run, 417-foot shot to center off Brewers reliever Thyago Vieira.

Ninth-place hitter Jacob Young bundled two hits, one RBI, two stolen bases and four runs scored for Washington, which has won the first two of the teams' four-game series. CJ Abrams had an RBI triple and Trey Lipscomb supplied three hits as the Nationals scored their most runs in a game this season.

Jacob Barnes (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for Washington in relief of starter Mitchell Parker, who allowed one run on six hits while striking out two and walking two.

Otto Lopez hit his first major league home run for Miami, a two-run shot in the ninth inning. Christian Bethancourt's RBI single earlier in the frame snapped his 0-for-29 skid to begin the season. Josh Bell went 2-for-5 to snap an 0-for-16 slump.

The Marlins committed three errors and lost their fifth-straight game.

Miami starter Edward Cabrera (1-1) cruised through the first four innings, limiting the Nationals to two hits, before faltering in the fifth frame.

Lipscomb singled and Eddie Rosario walked to lead off the inning before Lipscomb was forced out at third base on Senzel's bunt fielder's choice. Rosario then swiped third with Young at the plate, while Senzel advanced to second after Bethancourt's throw down to third base ricocheted off of Young's bat.

Washington went ahead 2-1 when Rosario slid safely ahead of Bethancourt's tag on Young's soft grounder. Young reached first base on the play.

Cabrera then walked Abrams on four pitches to load the bases for Winker, who clobbered Cabrera's hanging 2-1 curveball into the second deck in right field for his fourth career grand slam to boost the Nationals' lead to 6-1.

Boston starter Josh Winckowski stranded two baserunners to post a first-inning zero and send his offense up to the plate. O'Neill staked the Red Sox to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer over the Green Monster in the home team's third batter against Chicago's Ben Brown (0-1).

Jarren Duran lined a leadoff double to left field, setting up O'Neill for his ninth round-tripper of the season. Each of his first eight were solo shots.

The Cubs drove up Winckowski's pitch count to 52 pitches through three innings, but he left without allowing a run on only three hits.

In the fourth, Rafaela's sacrifice fly scored Yoshida following a leadoff single. Brown finished his day allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks across 3 2/3 innings.

The Red Sox broke the game open in a six-run fifth. O'Neill began it with a high wall-ball double in center, advanced on a wild pitch and came in on Wilyer Abreu's single.

Cubs reliever Luke Little hit two of the next three batters before Dalbec's ground-ball single deflected off the pitcher, allowing Abreu to score.

After Colten Brewer relieved Little, Rafaela ripped a three-run double deep into the left-field corner, then stole third and scored on Duran's RBI grounder.

Rafaela highlighted his monster day with a two-run homer in the seventh inning for his second this season. Yoshida led off the inning with a single and followed the 23-year-old across the plate for an 11-0 advantage.

Boston tagged Chicago position players Matt Mervis and Patrick Wisdom for six runs in the eighth. Yoshida doubled to score O'Neill, beginning a stretch of four straight RBI hits. A David Hamilton single and doubles by Dalbec and Rafaela followed.

Two batters later, Boston's Pablo Reyes -- who concluded the game on the mound himself -- continued the busy inning with another RBI knock.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run double in a four-run first inning as the St. Louis Cardinals raced out to a six-run lead and recorded a 7-4 victory over the host New York Mets on Saturday.

Nolan Arenado hit an RBI single in the opening frame against New York starter Adrian Houser (0-3) and reached base for a 25th straight game. Arenado also avoided a potentially scary injury in the seventh when he fouled a ball off his face in the area above his nose and near his forehead.

Masyn Winn and Nolan Gorman added RBI base hits as the Cardinals won their season-high third straight game and for the fourth time in five games.

Goldschmidt also hit an infield single, stole second and scored on a balk by New York reliever Josh Walker in the fifth during Gorman's at-bat to give St. Louis a 6-0 lead.

Brendan Donovan hit two doubles and also contributed a sacrifice fly that scored Gorman in the eighth

St. Louis starter Sonny Gray (3-1) benefitted from the early run support and allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits in six innings. Gray allowed a home run for the first time this season but also registered nine strikeouts after fanning 12 on Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Gray took a shutout into the fifth before Arenado misplayed Tyrone Taylor's grounder to third to open the inning. After Arenado's first error of the season, Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run single and Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer to pull the Mets within 6-4.

Alonso's homer was his 200th since making his debut with the Mets. He joined Darryl Strawberry, Mike Piazza and David Wright as the fourth player to hit 200 home runs with the Mets.

The Mets struck out 13 times and lost for the fifth time in six games following a six-game winning streak.

Houser was tagged for six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He has allowed 14 runs on 16 hits in his past two starts.

JoJo Romero and Andrew Kittredge pitched a scoreless inning apiece before Ryan Helsley escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to convert his ninth save.

Hunter Greene, Jonathan India star in Reds win at Rangers

Hunter Greene allowed one hit over seven shutout innings and Jonathan India went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-4 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Tex.

It was the first win in six starts this season for Greene (1-2) who walked one and struck out six. Will Benson also homered and had two hits for Cincinnati, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

Davis Wendzel hit his first major league home run, Josh Smith had two doubles and an RBI and Corey Seager also homered for Texas. Michael Lorenzen (2-1) suffered the loss allowing five runs on six hits over six innings. He walked one, struck out three and also hit a pair of batters.

Cincinnati took advantage of Lorenzen's wildness in taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Christian Encarnacion-Strand was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second on a walk by Jake Fraley. After Tyler Stephenson singled to load the bases with no outs, India singled to drive in Encarnacion-Strand. Nick Martini then drove in Fraley with a sacrifice fly.

The Reds extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Encarnacion-Strand led off with an infield single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single by India.

Cincinnati broke the game open with a pair of two-run homers in the seventh. India got the first, a 341-foot opposite field drive down the right line driving in Stephenson who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Benson then made it 7-0 with his fourth homer off reliever Jose Urena, driving in Martini who had singled.

Martini extended the lead to 8-0 in the eighth with a sacrifice fly, driving in Luke Maile who had singled and advanced to third on a single by India.

Texas, which had just one hit, a Smith double to open the fifth, in the first eight innings, made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Brent Suter, scoring four runs on six hits including back-to-back homers by Wendzel and Seager and an RBI double by Smith.

Closer Alexis Diaz had to be summoned to get the final two outs for his sixth save.

Cole Irvin pitches shutout as Orioles hammer Athletics

Cole Irvin pitches shutout as Orioles hammer Athletics

Cole Irvin pitched seven shutout innings and Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle hit back-to-back solo home runs as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-0 on Saturday.

Gunnar Henderson added a two-run homer as the Orioles cranked up their power numbers after a slight decline in that area. It was his third homer in four games and ninth for the season.

Irvin limited the Athletics to four hits while striking out five without a walk. Mike Baumann and Dillon Tate each pitched an inning to complete the five-hitter.

Irvin (2-1), a left-hander, followed last Sunday's outing at Kansas City when he went 6 2/3 shutout innings on four hits.

The long balls for Rutschman, Mountcastle and Henderson came after the Orioles, who had been one of the top slugging teams in baseball for the first month of the season, had gone three consecutive games with only one homer in each of those games.

JP Sears worked 6 1/3 innings for the Athletics, allowing seven runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and issued his only walk in the seventh.

The outcome evened the count going into Sunday's series finale.

No player in the game had more than one hit until Henderson's homer in the seventh.

The Athletics had difficulty generating any offense. They didn't have a base runner until the fourth inning, and then they hit into double plays in the fifth and seventh frames.

Sears (1-2), also a left-hander, was perfect through three innings before Gunnar Henderson led off the bottom of the fourth with a single.

That hit sparked a three-run rally. Anthony Santander's double drove in Henderson and consecutive singles from Jordan Westburg, Cedric Mullins and James McCann resulted in two more runs.

There were two outs in the fifth when Rutschman smashed his third home run of the season and Mountcastle followed with his third of the year. Rutschman, a switch-hitter batting from the right side, sent his shot into the stands beyond left field.

The Athletics were trying to produce their second three-game winning streak of the season.

Mookie Betts, Tyler Glasnow lead streaking Dodgers past Blue Jays

Mookie Betts had three hits, one RBI and a stolen base, right-hander Tyler Glasnow struck out nine and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Dodgers have won the first two games of the three-game series. They are 5-0 to open a nine-game road trip and have won six in a row overall.

The Blue Jays have lost five in a row, including the first two games of a six-game homestand.

Toronto left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (2-2) allowed four runs, nine hits and no walks with three strikeouts in six innings.

Glasnow (5-1) allowed one run, two hits and three walks in six-plus innings. He left the game with cramps.

The Dodgers scored a run in the first inning. Betts led off with a triple when center fielder Daulton Varsho tried to make a diving catch on a sinking drive. The ball went to the wall. Freddie Freeman hit a one-out sacrifice fly to center.

Los Angeles added two in the second. Enrique Hernandez and Andy Pages led off with singles. Chris Taylor hit a one-out RBI single and Shohei Ohtani hit a two-out RBI single.

The Dodgers took a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Miguel Rojas doubled, took third on Taylor's sacrifice bunt and scored on Betts' single to left.

Kikuchi retired his final eight batters before Genesis Cabrera replaced him to start the seventh inning. Cabrera retired two batters around an error and a single before he was replaced by Yimi Garcia, who finished the inning.

Danny Jansen led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and scored on a double to left by Davis Schneider.

Joe Kelly replaced Glasnow after a visit from the trainer.

Ryan Brasier pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth for the Dodgers with two strikeouts.

Evan Phillips earned his eighth save of the season after giving up an unearned run in the ninth. Phillips's two-base throwing error on Schneider's two-out comebacker was followed by Cavan Biggio's RBI single.
